MICHAEL JACKSON is known as the father of pop.
He was one of the few in his time to be a
complete entertainer. He was a songwriter, a great singer and a dancer. His perfectionism is a benchmark used for any dancer even today.
The concept of music videos as short films is one of Michael Jackson's greatest accomplishments. You know, the way music videos often have this
In the 80's MJ's "Motown 25" performance and the subsequent sales of Thriller almost singlehandedly kickstarted the music industry, which was getting sorta dusty at the time.
MJ made MTV the success it is today, and moreover, through his sheer skill and success, moved it to integrate black music in the channel. He effectively broke through a racial barrier, which has made it possible for pretty much all African-American artists after him to even get on TV.
Michael Jackson popularized the Robot, break-dancing and many other dance styles. He also invented a lot of cool moves, although the Moonwalk is not one of them.
To sum it up, MJ took elements from all the greats before him, condensed them to one entertainer, added copious amounts of his own individualism and innovation and thereby became the man he is.
As far as influence on music in general, Elvis, The Beatles, Bob Dylan etc had a much bigger influence on music than Michael Jackson did.
But if you take the question to read "After MJ influenced music, who was the next person to influence music as much?" then there are a number of contenders, most notably Madonna who influenced music as much at the same time.
In the years since, Nirvana obviously helped to invent Grunge which was more than just a style of music, it was a movement that took in fashion and culture as well. And the power of grunge wasn't just to invent a new style, it killed off other styles. Prior to Nirvana the charts were dominated by hair-bands who played loud stadium rock with flamboyant hair, power chords and a lot of flash. Nirvana, Pearl Jam and others killed that stone dead.
Green day helped to fuse pop and punk into something which wasn't quite either but was a huge commercial success.
Fatboy Slim took dance beats out of dance music and translated it into CD sales.
Radiohead helped rock become something intellectual without ever removing its soul.
Eminem made rap a white boy's game.
The Stone Roses helped invent Madchester and revitalised Britpop.
There are lots of others...
