INTERVIEW PROPER.
1. WHAT IS FILM MAKING TO YOU?
CHUKS: Film making is one thing to me. A medium I make use of to bring out all what I have in my head for people to see. My imaginations, thoughts, my ideas... Filmmaking is simply my inner me and the birth of my inner thought.
2. WHAT MOTIVATE YOU?
CHUKS:Anything motivates me... Situations, challenges et cetera. But most especially God! He gave me my mind to think and I am so grateful to him for that.
3. WHAT WILL YOU LIKE TO CHANGE IN NIGERIA FILMMAKING?
CHUKS:Hmmmm many things... So many things... We are not there at all. Even our cinema movies are not even near... We are still based on our normal story line. The only difference between our cinema movies and our normal home video is the advanced way it is being shot. Nothing mind blowing or extra ordinary and even the extra ordinary ones we make are so fake and disbelieving. I would love to change that and make our films worth watching.
4. HOW HAS PEFTI SHAPED YOUR CAREER?
CHUKS:Hmmmmmm. Pefti film institute... "We are nothing but pencils in the hand of the creator". Now I know how true the motto is. I found out that"A pen doesn't write on its own. The owner of it does d writing" this is why I say so.
Before coming to Pefti, I had applied for admission in Nnamdi Azikiwe university to study theatre Art's in 2010. I passed jamb with 213, and their post utme having 74/100 but wasn't given admission. My father I guess actually didn't buy me going to Pefti although I chose it as my second choice. Even the day we were to go and pay the fees, he still asked us to branch to a cafe to check if Unizik has given me admission but no. I payed and I was so grateful I went to Pefti. Most things I know has its birth from Pefti and had it been I went to unizik definitely I might have not known as much as I know now. Pefti helped me shape my career and put me in the right path to follow.
5. AS DIRECTOR, HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE YOUR ACTORS TO INTERPRETE THEIR ROLES ACCORDINGLY.
CHUKS: I try to make them feel at first at home, make them believe in themselves, telling them they can do it. But what I do most of the time is that I get them to watch a movie and pick out a character there I want them to act like. It gives them a direction and perception on what I want even without me directing them. The lead actor for my short film Adepoju Wale had to watch series of films with me to fit into the character I needed and it was very easy. He gave me what i wanted without much corrections. This is my style.
6. WHICH DIRECTOR DO YOU LOOK UP TO AND WHY?
CHUKS: I look up to Bryan Singer... i would love to work with him someday. From xmen apocalypse, I fell more in love with singer. I admire his sense of directing. I don't know why, but whatever I do, I try to do a little of what he does.
7. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
CHUKS:That's a huge question... Before answering this question, I would love to share this encounter. I travelled to delta state to see a gem and one of the early founders of the department of theatre arts, university of ibadan concerning a documentary I was working on for the department. The person of DEMAS NWOKO. He is a gifted artist and sculptor who came to limelight in festac 77 with his wonderful crafts. In the process of talking, we entered into a personal discussion and had to share something with me.He told me that he was in an interview when he was much younger than I was and was asked where he would want to paint next. He replied "I don't want to paint in frames anymore but I want to paint the sky" then he asked me "can you beat that?" He said if I can beat that, I will be whoever I want to be. Back to your question...
I believe in myself and in my dreams and in the power of my ideas. I have no limits. I will let my dreams carry me probably to the heavens. But I promise I will not only paint the sky like Demas but will shoot a movie in it that even God will say "this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased" Nigeria, the Renaissance of your movie industry is at hand.
WE WILL BRING YOU MORE INFORMATION WHEN IT'S TIME TO VOTE...
